Ukraine Braces for Winter's Coldest Night on February 10, Forecaster Says
Weather Forecast for February 10
According to Главком: Meteorologist Ivan Semylit forecasts a severe temperature drop, with the coldest night of the winter expected across Ukraine on February 10. Overnight, temperatures in most regions will plummet to between -15°C and -20°C. The northern regions will experience an even more intense chill, with lows of -22°C to -24°C. In the western, southern, and southeastern areas, nighttime temperatures will range from -12°C to -17°C.
This sharp cold snap is being driven by an anticyclone that has moved in from Scandinavia. An anticyclone is a high-pressure weather system characterized by descending air masses. As Ivan Semylit explains, this descending air compresses and warms adiabatically, which reduces relative humidity and inhibits the condensation of water vapor, leading to clear, dry, and very cold conditions.
Outlook for February 11
In addition to the extreme cold, a yellow-level warning for icy conditions has been issued by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center for February 9. For the night of February 11, forecasters predict temperatures in the eastern regions will be between -13°C and -18°C. In the western and southern areas, expect lows of -9°C to -4°C, while other regions, including Kyiv, will see temperatures of -9°C to -14°C.
During the daytime on February 11, temperatures nationwide will range from -4°C to -9°C, with readings near 0°C expected in the west and south. In central and northern areas, daytime highs will be between -1°C and -6°C. Ivan Semylit notes that daytime temperatures will be more pleasant and milder, with frosts gradually weakening across Ukraine in the following days. Such severe winter weather is a significant test for the country's infrastructure, which has faced immense strain in recent years.
The significant temperature drop and hazardous conditions are likely to impact various sectors of life in Ukraine, including:
- transportation
- energy supply
- public health
Relevant authorities have already taken steps to warn the public about potential difficulties related to the ice and severe frost. Continued monitoring of weather conditions will help avoid unforeseen situations and ensure safer conditions for citizens.
