PExT Terminal Launches into Space

According to НВ — Техно: On July 23, 2025, NASA launched the PExT terminal aboard the BARD spacecraft, a vehicle built by York Space Systems. Designed to operate across multiple satellite networks-including the Ka-band-the terminal successfully transmitted data through NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System as well as commercial networks run by Viasat and SES Space and Defense during initial tests.

Objectives and Extended Testing Phase

The primary goals of the PExT terminal mission were achieved by December 2025. Continuing its research, NASA kicked off an expanded testing program in January 2026 that is expected to run at least through April 2027. As part of this phase, more than 50 direct data-exchange sessions are planned via a partner ground station in Weilheim, Germany.

NASA is also working with Aalyria Technologies to demonstrate the Spacetime software platform. The project is funded and coordinated by NASA's Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program, in close collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. An illustration of the experimental PExT terminal establishing a direct link with Earth has been released in NASA materials. This was reported by SciTechDaily.

The launch of the PExT terminal marks a significant milestone in the advancement of satellite technology and space-based communications. The research conducted under this program has the potential to greatly improve data transmission between spacecraft and Earth-a capability critical for future space exploration missions. Partnering with commercial companies also highlights the private sector's growing role in space technology.
