Russian Agents Recruited Teenager to Poison Ukrainian Soldier with Methadone, Prosecutors Say
Suspect Arrested for Murder of Ukrainian Serviceman
According to Главком: Prosecutors in the Zhytomyr region are preparing charges against a 17-year-old girl from the Berdychiv district, accused of killing a Ukrainian soldier on orders from Russian intelligence. According to investigators, the teenager laced the serviceman's drink with methadone, a powerful synthetic opioid, resulting in his death. This case highlights the ongoing threat of Russian attempts to recruit local civilians for covert operations.
The suspect was taken into custody on June 5, 2026. She told authorities that her handler from the Russian Federation contacted her via the Telegram messaging app. On June 3, 2026, she met with the soldier and, during a shared meal, added the methadone she had received by mail to his beverage. The serviceman was found dead the following day.
Investigation and Broader Context
A forensic medical examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. The case is currently classified as premeditated murder under Article 115, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Investigators from the Main Department of the National Police in Zhytomyr region are conducting the pre-trial inquiry, with operational support from the regional Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
This incident underscores the persistent threat posed by Russian special services, which continue to exploit local residents in an effort to destabilize Ukraine. The arrest of other agents and saboteurs demonstrates the active measures Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are taking to counter such threats.
Thorough investigations into crimes like this are critical for ensuring the safety of both military personnel and civilians amid the ongoing armed conflict.
This alarming case is not an isolated incident, as the Ukrainian Security Service has recently successfully disrupted a plot to assassinate a senior naval officer. Such operations highlight the ongoing threats posed by Russian intelligence agencies, which continue to target military and civilian individuals in their attempts to undermine Ukraine's stability.
