Russian Drone Strike Hits Kernel Grain Terminal in Chornomorsk Port Overnight

Night attack on Kernel grain terminal
Вночі ворог завдав удару по зерновому терміналу компанії Kernel у порту Чорноморська.

Strike on Kernel's Grain Terminal

According to Главком: In the early hours of June 5, Russian drones targeted a grain terminal operated by Kernel in the port of Chornomorsk, Odesa region. The attack damaged infrastructure used for grain storage and transshipment, and partially destroyed auxiliary warehouse facilities. Grain spilled out, disrupting terminal operations. Crucially, the company confirmed that no employees were harmed. Kernel has begun cleanup efforts and is assessing the extent of the damage.

This is not the first time Russia has struck Kernel's agricultural facilities. On May 19, drones damaged a Kernel elevator complex in Khmelnytskyi region, and on the night of May 3, drones attacked the company's vegetable oil transshipment terminal in the same Chornomorsk port. In August 2024, a Kernel oilseed processing plant in western Ukraine was hit. Russia has been deliberately targeting port infrastructure in Odesa region, with attacks on terminals and warehouses occurring at least several times a month.

Impact on the Agricultural Sector

According to the Ministry of Economy, in some months such strikes reduce grain shipment volumes by 20 to 30 percent. Unsold product surpluses accumulate on the market, which could negatively affect the agricultural sector. Odesa region remains one of the most heavily shelled areas in the country.

Kernel emphasized that Ukrainian agriculture is resilient not because conditions are easy, but because it is backed by people who know how to act even after strikes. The company also stressed that all contractual obligations to partners will be fulfilled on time. Additionally, Kernel noted its effective logistics chain adaptation system, allowing it to continue operations despite numerous challenges.

Attacks on agricultural companies like Kernel highlight the growing risk to food security in Ukraine, particularly in the Odesa region, where the agricultural sector is a key part of the economy. Infrastructure damage can lead not only to reduced export volumes but also to higher grain prices, affecting consumers worldwide. The continued strikes point to a deliberate strategy that could have long-term consequences for Ukrainian agriculture and its international partners.

The ongoing conflict has seen a series of targeted strikes on critical infrastructure, not only in Ukraine but also beyond its borders. For instance, a recent attack on an oil terminal in St. Petersburg underscores the broader implications of these military actions on the region's economy and security. Such incidents raise concerns about the stability of agricultural and energy sectors alike, as the repercussions of these assaults continue to unfold.
