Drone Attack on St. Petersburg

According to Главком: In the early hours of June 3, a drone assault on St. Petersburg sparked a fire at an oil terminal in Ugolnaya Harbor. Governor Alexander Beglov confirmed the attack and reported that three UAVs were shot down over the city. The blaze engulfed the tank farm of the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal (SPOT), a facility that has been in operation since 1892.

This strike is part of a broader campaign by Ukrainian defense forces targeting Russia’s oil export infrastructure. Earlier, on the night of January 18, 2024, a drone attempted to hit the same terminal but was intercepted by air defense systems. Beglov noted that security in the Leningrad region demands attention, as the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has assessed that the area’s air defenses are ill-prepared for strikes originating from Ukraine.

Impact on Oil Infrastructure

It is worth noting that Ukrainian units have repeatedly struck the oil port of Primorsk. Following attacks in March, that port lost at least 40% of its tank capacity, significantly impacting Russia’s refining sector. According to Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Russian oil processing volumes dropped by at least 10% over several months in 2026.

Among recent operations, the May 2026 strike on the Yaroslavl-3 oil pumping station further underscores the systematic campaign by Ukrainian forces against Russian petroleum infrastructure. These events highlight an escalation in military actions aimed at destroying resources that sustain Russia’s economy amid the ongoing conflict.

Targeted strikes on oil facilities could severely undermine Russia’s economic stability, given that the petroleum industry is crucial for funding military operations. Successful Ukrainian operations also demonstrate their ability to adapt to the adversary and leverage cutting-edge technology, such as drones, to achieve their objectives.
