German companies continue to operate in Russia despite the conflict with Ukraine. In 2024, they paid billions of dollars in taxes, supporting the Russian economy. Among these companies are Hochland and Knauf, which have different approaches to the situation.
'Companies support Russia's military economy through taxes' – emphasizes B4Ukraine leader Sinani. According to him, supporting Russian businesses may help the aggressor meet military needs, even if these companies do not directly participate in the conflict.
Other companies, such as Hochland, justify their presence in Russia by preserving jobs, but at the same time condemn the war. Meanwhile, Knauf plans to exit the Russian market due to challenging conditions but faces issues with rising taxes and permits.
In total, foreign companies paid over $20 billion in taxes in 2024, which may support Russia's military needs. This issue raises discussion in both international business circles and among politicians and the public.
