Traffic Cameras Now Enforce Red Light Violations with Automatic Fines
New Automated Enforcement Cameras Deployed
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine has activated a new network of traffic cameras designed to catch drivers who run red lights. The fine for this violation is set at 540 hryvnias. Notices of these fines will be sent automatically to the driver's electronic cabinet or via the 'Diia' app. This initiative aims to improve road safety and reduce the number of traffic accidents. Automated enforcement is a growing trend globally, used to address violations that are dangerous but difficult for officers to catch manually.
Installed at intersections, these cameras can detect vehicles passing through a red light. No police officer is required to be present to issue the fine. Previously, automated devices were primarily used on highways for speed control; their functionality has now been expanded to urban intersections.
Impact on Driver Behavior
Experts suggest the new cameras could significantly alter driver habits.
"Driving through a yellow light as it turns red, or starting on a red-all of this will be recorded as a violation," notes the author of the 'AvtoTema' channel.
It is also emphasized that "the system fulfills its function even if drivers are aware of it." Cameras are already operational in cities including Brovary, Bila Tserkva, Vinnytsia, Chornomorsk, and Chernihiv.
The rollout is part of broader state efforts to enhance road safety in Ukraine. Automating the fining process aims to reduce the human factor in traffic rule enforcement, potentially leading to greater driver accountability. Since violation data is sent directly to drivers via digital platforms, it may streamline the payment process and increase awareness of traffic rules. In the long term, these measures could lower the rate of traffic incidents and improve overall road safety across the country.
