Hungary's New Prime Minister Proposes Meeting with Zelenskyy in Transcarpathia
Hungarian PM Seeks Talks with Ukrainian President
According to ХВИЛЯ: Hungary's Prime Minister Peter Magyar has extended an invitation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a meeting in Berehove, a town in Transcarpathia with a large ethnic Hungarian population. The offer was made during a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Budapest has already initiated working-level consultations with Kyiv concerning the rights of the Hungarian minority, marking a significant step in bilateral relations.
Magyar emphasized that the state of bilateral ties is directly linked to Ukraine's European integration path. He expressed hope that a series of working negotiations would conclude swiftly, stating:
“We have already signaled to the Ukrainian side and even started working consultations on the rights of the Hungarian minority-linguistic and others-so that they, too, receive everything that everyone else in the European Union has. I hope this series of working negotiations will conclude quickly, and, as I proposed, we might be able to meet with President Zelenskyy in Berehove, Transcarpathia, where Hungarians make up a significant portion of the population.” - Peter Magyar
Improving Bilateral Ties
The foreign ministries of both Ukraine and Hungary have officially announced the start of online consultations aimed at enhancing bilateral relations. At the outset of these talks, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha declared:
“Ukraine seeks to open a new, mutually beneficial chapter in our bilateral relations, based on trust.” - Ukraine's Foreign Minister
Budapest has signaled its readiness to approve the opening of the first negotiation cluster, Fundamentals, in Ukraine's EU accession talks, once the situation of Hungarians in Transcarpathia is resolved.
Additionally, according to Euronews, Hungary may now agree to sanctions against Patriarch Kirill. EU ambassadors are discussing a mini-package of restrictions targeting a dozen individuals previously shielded by former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Notably, the EU first attempted to add Kirill to the sanctions list in 2022, but Budapest blocked the move at the time, citing religious freedom concerns.
This potential meeting between Hungary's prime minister and Ukraine's president could mark a pivotal moment in improving ties between the two nations, particularly regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine and Kyiv's EU integration ambitions. Resolving these issues may not only foster bilateral cooperation but also positively influence the broader regional political landscape, especially in the context of continued EU support for Ukraine.
As discussions progress, it is important to note that expert-level negotiations have commenced between Ukraine and Hungary. These talks aim to address key issues surrounding EU accession negotiations, further emphasizing the significance of bilateral relations in light of the proposed meeting between Prime Minister Magyar and President Zelenskyy.
