Ukraine and Russia Conduct Major Prisoner Exchange

According to Главком: In a significant diplomatic move, Ukraine and Russia have exchanged 200 prisoners of war each. This swap marks the initial phase of a broader agreement, negotiated with U.S. involvement, which ultimately aims to return 1,000 captured personnel-500 from each side. Among the 200 Ukrainians now freed are defenders of Mariupol who had been held captive for nearly four years, alongside soldiers who fought on the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia fronts. Such exchanges are rare and often require complex, high-level mediation.

Composition of the Released Personnel

The freed Ukrainian service members come from a wide array of military branches, including:

  • Naval Forces
  • Ground Forces
  • Territorial Defense Forces
  • Unmanned Systems Forces
  • Air Assault Forces
  • Air Force

The group also includes personnel from:

  • The National Guard of Ukraine
  • The State Border Guard Service
  • The State Special Transport Service

Upon their return, the soldiers will undergo medical examinations, receive rehabilitation, and be provided with compensation payments. The Russian side stated that this phase of the exchange will continue into the next day. Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the release of two Ukrainian soldiers who hold Hungarian passports, following a personal appeal from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. This highlights how third-party diplomacy can influence the fate of individual prisoners within the larger conflict.

This prisoner exchange represents a critical humanitarian step amid the ongoing war and a potential foundation for further dialogue. The return of captured soldiers provides vital relief to their families and underscores the importance of international diplomacy, as seen with the roles played by the United States and Hungary in facilitating these negotiations.
