Two-time Olympic champion from Germany in biathlon Laura Dahlmeier died as a result of an accident during her ascent in the mountains of Pakistan. The athlete was caught under a landslide at an altitude of about 5700 meters in the Karakoram mountains.
Rescue teams were unable to reach Laura, and her body showed no signs of life. An international team of climbers was involved in the search operation, however, due to bad weather conditions and the threat of new landslides, the search efforts were temporarily halted.
"Based on the results of helicopter flyovers and the description of the injuries sustained by Laura from her partner’s words, it can be assumed that she died on the spot," representatives of ZDF reported.
"Due to unfavorable weather conditions and the threat of repeated landslides, the ascent to Laila Peak is too dangerous for the rescuers," the official statement said.
