Hungarian Opposition Party Tisza Leads Ruling Fidesz in Pre-Election Poll
Opposition Party Tisza Holds Lead Over Fidesz
According to Главком: According to a poll conducted by Zavecz Research between January 19 and 24, the opposition party Tisza holds a ten-point advantage over Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's ruling Fidesz party ahead of the parliamentary elections. The survey shows 49% of voters are prepared to support Tisza, compared to 39% for Fidesz. This poll comes at a critical time as Hungary, a key member of NATO and the EU, prepares for a vote that could shift its political direction.
Support for Tisza has increased by two percentage points since November, when it stood at 47%. In contrast, support for Fidesz was one percentage point lower in November at 38%. A demographic breakdown reveals Tisza holds 41% support among citizens under 39, while Fidesz leads among voters over 59 with 38%.
Education and Regional Divides
Fidesz maintains an edge among voters with only a primary education and residents of small towns and rural areas, polling at 40% compared to Tisza's 36% in villages. Meanwhile, in the capital Budapest, the opposition party commands 44% support, while Fidesz trails at just 21%. The Hungarian parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 12. Notably, Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has previously accused Ukraine of attempting to influence the formation of the Hungarian government.
The poll results suggest a potential shift in Hungary's political landscape, where the opposition Tisza party could secure a significant mandate to form a new government.
This also points to growing support among younger voters and capital city residents, which may reflect changing public sentiments. As the election approaches, these polling figures are likely to influence the campaign strategies and public positioning of both major parties.
