Exhumation and Reburial of Andriy Melnyk

According to Главком: On May 19, 2026, the remains of Colonel Andriy Melnyk, head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), and his wife Sofia Fedak-Melnyk were exhumed in Luxembourg for transport to Ukraine. A reburial ceremony is scheduled for May 24 at the National Military Memorial Cemetery in Kyiv. Officials from the Ukrainian government and church representatives attended the event.

The requiem service was led by Bishop Ihor Rantsia of the Eparchy of Saint Volodymyr the Great in Paris. Participants included:

  • Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Iryna Vereshchuk,
  • Ukraine's Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg Yaroslav Melnyk,
  • Honorary Consul Claude Radu,
  • Head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory Oleksandr Alfiorov,
  • OUN Leader Bohdan Chervak.

The couple's remains have been prepared for shipment to their homeland.

Significance of the Event for Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy underscored the importance of this moment on April 22, announcing efforts to establish a Pantheon of Outstanding Ukrainians. He stated:

“The state is bringing its heroes home, and decisions are being prepared for the reburial of other historical figures.” – Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Zelenskyy added: 'What Ukrainians and Ukraine have long hoped to begin. Returning to our land, to our independent sovereign state-and with due honor-those who fought for Ukraine, who wanted independence for Ukraine.'

Following the exhumation, requiem services will be held on May 22–23 at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ (UGCC) in Kyiv. The solemn reburial will take place on May 24 at the National Military Memorial Cemetery in Kyiv. This procedure is part of a broader effort to repatriate Ukrainian figures who fought for the country's independence and were buried abroad.

This event marks a key step in honoring prominent Ukrainians who contributed significantly to the struggle for independence.
