Dialogue on a Common Easter Date

According to Главком: Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew are continuing their dialogue on establishing a single, common date for Easter to be observed by all Christians. This issue was previously raised during last year's commemoration of the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea. The quest for a shared Easter date is a centuries-old ecumenical goal aimed at healing a major division within Christianity. In a related development, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine adopted the Revised Julian calendar for fixed feast days starting September 1, 2023. This decision was made to preserve unity within Ukraine and to implement calendar reform in coordination with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

"Our church, caring for the preservation of unity in Ukraine and implementing calendar reform, did this together with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The UGCC in Ukraine transitioned to the new calendar for fixed feasts on September 1, 2023, while maintaining the current Paschalion [method for calculating Easter]. This means that feasts like Christmas, Epiphany, and the Dormition of the Mother of God, which fall on specific dates each year, we now celebrate on the same day as much of the world. Regarding Easter, the Paschalion has remained as it was."

Father Ihor Yatsiv

Despite positive signals from the dialogue between the Pope and the Patriarch, Father Ihor Yatsiv emphasizes: "Unfortunately, this has not yet happened, but we have good signals that this dialogue has been initiated at the behest of the Pope and the Patriarch."

Prospects for 2026

In 2026, the dates for Easter will once again diverge:

  • For the Western rite (Catholics), Easter will fall on April 5,
  • For the Eastern rite (Orthodox), it will be on April 12.

The ceremony of the Holy Fire at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is scheduled for Great Saturday, April 11, 2026. Separately, it is noted that the estimated cost of a traditional Ukrainian Easter basket in 2026 has risen to 1903 hryvnias, which is 14.4% higher than the 2025 cost of 1663 hryvnias.

Thus, the question of a common Paschalion remains relevant, and its discussion will undoubtedly influence the future development of relations between Christian denominations.

The ongoing talks for a shared Easter date underscore a drive for unity among Christian traditions, which could become a significant step toward mending the historical schism between Western and Eastern Christianity. Concurrently, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church's decision to adopt a new calendar for fixed feasts signals a pursuit of national unity, highlighting the importance of calendar reform within the context of contemporary challenges facing Ukrainian society.

As the discussions between Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew unfold, the implications for future observances are significant. With Easter 2026 set to see a divergence in dates, it is essential for the faithful to stay informed about local arrangements. For instance, Kyiv's public transport will operate on a regular schedule during Easter, ensuring accessibility for those wishing to participate in the celebrations, regardless of the date they observe. This logistical consideration highlights the ongoing adjustments within the Christian community as they navigate these changes.
