Pope Leo XIV Takes Up Residence in the Apostolic Palace

According to Главком: Pope Leo XIV has moved into the historic papal apartments at the heart of the Vatican's Apostolic Palace. This marks a return to a tradition of residing in this central location, which his predecessor, Pope Francis, had set aside in favor of a more modest, hotel-style room in the Santa Marta guesthouse. The Apostolic Palace residence, where popes have lived since 1870, consists of approximately ten rooms, including a chapel, a foyer, a library, a study, a dining room, a bedroom, and a room overlooking St. Peter's Square.

Elected in May 2025, Pope Leo XIV is the first U.S.-born pontiff. Following his election, he initially continued to live in the Palace of the Holy Office. His move to the Apostolic Palace now signals a new phase in his papacy. In preparation, the palace underwent renovations over recent months, with updates focused on internet connectivity and security systems.

A Vatican press release stated: 'This afternoon, Pope Leo XIV will take up his apartments in the Apostolic Palace and, together with his closest collaborators, will move into the premises previously occupied by his predecessors.'

In another break from his predecessor's practice, Leo XIV has also reinstated the use of the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo near Rome. The pontiff spends most Tuesdays there, engaging in tennis and swimming.

Appeals for Peace

Separately, Pope Leo XIV has called for an immediate ceasefire on the eve of the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This appeal underscores the Vatican's diplomatic focus on peace and dialogue amid ongoing global conflicts. His statements carry significant moral weight for the international community.

The Pope's transition to the Apostolic Palace is more than a symbolic return to tradition; it may indicate his intent to engage more directly in global affairs, particularly on issues of peace and reconciliation. As global tensions persist, such pronouncements from the Holy See can influence international discourse and encourage steps toward peaceful conflict resolution.
