Ukrainian Railway Passengers Forced to Evacuate and Hide Under Trains During Drone Attack
Passengers Evacuated from Ukrainian Train During Air Raid
According to Главком: Passengers on a Ukrainian Railways train were forced to evacuate and take cover under the carriages during an air raid alert due to the threat of 'Shahed' drone attacks. Journalist Tetiana Zaiets recounted her experience of a nighttime evacuation that occurred in the early morning in central Ukraine. She described passengers, including children, waiting outside in the rain for the duration of the alert.
Zaiets explained that the train conductors distributed blankets to provide some comfort. People were required to remain outside for approximately two hours.
“Half-asleep, I only heard the conductor say: Evacuation. We cleared the carriage. We took only personal and valuable items. It was raining outside. Thank you to the conductors for giving out blankets. That's how we held on for two hours,” she noted.
To avoid danger, passengers hid beneath the train cars.
“We hid under the carriages from the Shaheds. I now know what it's like when a swarm flies over. This is what hell looks like. The train was stopped at night somewhere in central Ukraine. I don't even know the name of the settlement. When the Shaheds were buzzing, we crawled under a freight car,” the journalist added.
Among the passengers were children who were being transported from medical treatment. “The last carriage in the train was carrying children. They were being taken from treatment. Sleepy, they were crying. I thought I was in some horror movie. But no, this is our life. And thank God, the all-clear was given. We are alive. We moved on,” Zaiets said.
Revised Evacuation Protocol
Ukrainian Railways has announced a change to its emergency action algorithm: evacuation is no longer automatic but is now only initiated when there is a confirmed, direct threat to a specific train. Photographer Yan Dobronosov was also among the passengers evacuated at night due to the attack threat. He stated that the evacuation process was organized.
The incident was a severe ordeal for the passengers, who endured a wave of anxiety and danger during their journey. As an anonymous former railway worker commented, “never get under a train car! I won't describe how the train's braking system works, but it is very dangerous.”
This event underscores the harsh realities faced by Ukrainian Railways passengers amid the ongoing war. Unpredictable threats force people to act quickly and make difficult decisions for their own safety. The revised evacuation protocols implemented by Ukrainian Railways highlight the need to adapt to new challenges, with passenger safety remaining the top priority in such critical situations. The constant threat of Iranian-made 'Shahed' drones has become a grim feature of daily life in Ukraine, impacting even routine travel.
The recent incident highlights the urgent need for updated safety measures during air raids. In light of this event, Ukrainian Railways has revised its evacuation procedures to ensure better protection for passengers in future emergencies. These changes aim to enhance response protocols and provide clearer guidelines for when evacuation should be initiated, ultimately prioritizing the safety of travelers during such critical situations.
