The passport booklet from 1994 remains valid: replacement for an ID card is voluntary

Confirmation of the validity of old sample passports

The State Migration Service of Ukraine has confirmed that the passport of a citizen of Ukraine in the form of a booklet from 1994 remains valid without mandatory replacement. This means that holders of such passports can continue to use them without worrying about the need to obtain a new ID card.

According to current legislation, there is no set period after which a passport must be changed. Thus, the exchange of booklet passports for ID cards is voluntary, except for certain cases defined by law. ID cards are issued in the following situations:

• when obtaining a passport for the first time after the age of 14,
• loss or theft of the document,
• expiration of the ID card validity period,
• change of personal data,
• correction of errors in the passport,
• unserviceability of the passport,
• sticking a photo after the age of 25 or 45.

Restrictions on obtaining old sample passports

At the same time, it is worth noting that old sample passports can only be issued by court decision. This creates certain restrictions for those who can expect to obtain a booklet-form passport under modern conditions.
