Pension Increases in Ukraine from March 2024

According to ХВИЛЯ: A significant pension increase of 11.5% to 14% is scheduled to take effect in Ukraine from March 1, 2024. The Cabinet of Ministers is expected to approve the final indexation coefficient in February, which will be the key financial development for the month. This adjustment is part of the government's ongoing efforts to support retirees amidst economic pressures. However, the increase will be applied with specific caps on the total amount.

According to preliminary expert calculations, the exact percentage will be determined by a formula that accounts for 50% of last year's inflation rate and 50% of the average wage growth. It is crucial to note that this percentage will only be applied to the base pension amount, excluding any existing supplements. The government is likely to maintain these limits to help balance the state budget.

Automatic Top-Up Payments for Pensioners

In February, certain categories of pensioners will also receive automatic supplementary payments:

  • The minimum increase amount will be 100 UAH;
  • The maximum increase amount will be 1,500 UAH;
  • Pensioners who have turned 70, 75, or 80 years old will automatically receive an additional 300 to 570 UAH;
  • Non-working pensioners with a full service record (30/35 years) are guaranteed to receive no less than 40% of the minimum wage. Factoring in the planned minimum wage increase by 2026, this amount will be 3,458.8 UAH.

These changes to the pension system are designed to help ensure a minimum standard of living for retirees in the face of rising prices and inflation. While the increases are capped, they aim to alleviate the financial burden on the most vulnerable segments of the population. The provision of automatic top-ups for specific groups further highlights government efforts to target support to those in greatest need during a challenging economic period.
