Досвід життя з небезпечним предметом: кісточка персика, що двічі загрожувала життю чоловіка у Львові.

A Medical Case in the Lviv Region

According to Главком: A 62-year-old resident of the Sheptytskyi district in the Lviv region sought hospital care due to severe abdominal pain. His initial visit to a local hospital involved an endoscopic examination, which revealed a mass up to 4 cm in the lumen of his duodenum. Doctors initially suspected a biliary fistula, leading to the man's referral to a hospital in Lviv for specialized treatment. This case highlights how seemingly minor, forgotten incidents can develop into major medical emergencies over time.

Complications and Surgical Intervention

Subsequent attempts to remove the obstruction at another medical facility were unsuccessful. The patient's condition continued to deteriorate, prompting his admission to the Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University Hospital. By this time, the mass had caused a partial duodenal obstruction, leading to serious complications:

  • The formation of a diverticulum;
  • A pressure sore on the duodenal wall;
  • Impaired bile drainage from the liver ducts, which triggered mechanical jaundice and cholangitis.

During a one-hour surgery, doctors extracted a peach pit that had likely been lodged in his intestine for several years. Although the patient reported not having recently consumed peaches, the pit had already begun to cause life-threatening complications. Physicians warned that the situation could have led to peritonitis, a dangerous abdominal infection.

The situation also illustrates the necessity for accurate diagnosis and management of complications arising from foreign objects in the digestive tract. It serves as a reminder of the value of health awareness and regular medical check-ups, particularly for older adults.
