Talks at the Munich Security Conference

According to Главком: During the Munich Security Conference, Hungarian opposition party 'Tisza' leader Péter Magyar held talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Their discussion focused on matters concerning Ukraine and the bilateral relationship between Hungary and Poland. This meeting took place against a backdrop of pressing challenges facing both nations, which are key Central European members of both NATO and the EU.

Péter Magyar, a principal challenger to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in upcoming elections, stressed the critical need to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine. He noted that 'we agreed that both Hungary and Poland must do everything possible to bring about peace as soon as possible.' Magyar also expressed hope for the restoration of political, economic, and cultural ties between Hungary and Poland following a change in government, emphasizing the importance of revitalizing cooperation within the Visegrád Group (V4).

Conference Addresses

The conference also featured an address by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who outlined Poland's position on the situation in Ukraine. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, representing the Donald Trump administration, provided an assessment of the current state of peace negotiations and support for Ukraine. In his remarks, Magyar also alluded to personal connections, stating:

“Mrs. Orbán's surname is merely a coincidence.”

During the meeting, Tusk confirmed Poland's readiness for cooperation, responding to a question about his identity with:

“Everything is fine, my name is Donald.”

The encounter between Magyar and Tusk thus marked a significant step in advancing discussions on Ukraine at the international level and underscored both countries' desire to strengthen collaboration.

This meeting is particularly notable amid rising regional tensions and the urgent need to consolidate efforts to promote peace in Ukraine. The importance of cooperation between Hungary and Poland, along with their shared stance on peace negotiations, could prove pivotal in shaping a stable policy for Eastern Europe. Such dialogues may also influence subsequent European Union decisions regarding support for Ukraine and responses to Russian aggression.
