Ukraine Braces for Deep Freeze: Forecasters Pinpoint Dates of Most Severe Cold
Anticipating Winter's Deep Chill in Ukraine
According to ХВИЛЯ: Forecasters predict the most severe cold snap will grip Ukraine from February 2nd to 4th, with a noticeable easing of the frost expected from February 5th-6th. Meteorologist Natalka Didenko warned that temperatures during this period will be dangerously low, particularly overnight. Across much of the country, nighttime lows from February 2nd to 4th are forecast to plummet to -20...-28°C (-4...-18°F), with daytime highs ranging from -12...-19°C (10...-2°F). In southern regions, overnight temperatures will be slightly less extreme at -12...-18°C (10...0°F), with daytime readings of -2...-10°C (28...14°F).
Significant warming in the capital is not expected to begin until February 5th-6th. In Kyiv, temperatures tonight could drop to around -25°C (-13°F), with a daytime high near -15°C (5°F). It is important to note that most regions of Ukraine are not expected to see precipitation, with the exception of Crimea and the Azov Sea region, where snow and blizzards are forecast.
"It appears that February 2nd, 3rd, and 4th will be the peak of the cold in Ukraine, after which, from February 5th-6th, the frost will weaken considerably."
Natalka Didenko
Consequently, Ukrainians must prepare for a period of intense and potentially hazardous cold in the coming days. This severe weather event poses significant challenges to infrastructure and public health.
Guidance for the Public
With the anticipated peak of cold, Ukrainians are urged to exercise extreme caution, especially during nighttime hours when temperatures can be dangerous to health. Authorities are recommended to ensure proper safety conditions for citizens, particularly for vulnerable groups like the homeless and elderly. Forecasts indicate that after these frigid days, temperatures will begin to rise, which should subsequently ease the strain on the country's energy grid.
