North Korea Tests Upgraded Rocket Engine, Boosting Thrust by 26%
North Korea Conducts Major Rocket Engine Test
According to Главком: North Korea has carried out a ground test of an upgraded, high-thrust solid-fuel rocket engine designed for a new generation of missiles. The country's leader, Kim Jong Un, personally observed the tests, stating this marked a
"decisive step in strengthening the nation's strategic forces"
. The engine achieved a maximum thrust of 2,500 kN, a 26% increase over the 1,971 kN recorded in tests conducted last September. This development is part of Pyongyang's ongoing efforts to modernize its missile arsenal, which has long been a source of international tension.
A key feature of the new engine is its use of composite carbon fiber materials, which enhances the mobility of the missiles. The shift to solid fuel from liquid propellant allows for near-instantaneous missile launches, a significant tactical advantage. Analysts believe this engine is being developed for the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which could carry multiple warheads simultaneously using MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle) technology.
North Korea and Belarus Sign Friendship Treaty
In a separate diplomatic move, North Korea and Belarus have signed a comprehensive friendship treaty. The document was inked by Kim Jong Un and Alexander Lukashenko during a meeting in Pyongyang on March 26. The treaty establishes a framework for cooperation across several sectors, including:
- Diplomacy
- Agriculture
- Education
- Healthcare
North Korea has a history of testing various intercontinental ballistic missiles. Older models that use liquid fuel require lengthy fueling procedures before launch and have a limited shelf life, unlike the newer solid-fuel designs. The exact date and location of this latest engine test were not disclosed by the state news agency.
These recent engine tests underscore a significant enhancement in North Korea's military capabilities, raising concerns within the international community, particularly among neighboring nations. The newly signed friendship treaty with Belarus suggests a strengthening alliance between the two countries amid global political tensions, a partnership that could further impact regional stability in Northeast Asia.
