North Korea's Involvement in the War Against Ukraine

According to Главком: North Korean military personnel are now actively engaged in Russia's war against Ukraine, suffering significant casualties. Recent reports indicate that approximately 6,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded in the conflict. This direct participation marks a significant escalation in Pyongyang's support for Moscow. Currently, around 11,000 troops from the DPRK are stationed in Kursk Oblast, comprising 10,000 regular soldiers and 1,000 engineers.

Operational Status and Military Tasks

About 1,100 personnel who returned to North Korea in December 2025 may be redeployed to Russia. In a move highlighting its deepening military commitment, Pyongyang has established a new department for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), signaling an enhancement of its military presence and technological development. As of February 2026, DPRK forces are actively involved in attacks on Ukrainian border communities from within Russia's Kursk region, operating under the direct command of Russian officers. North Korea has also confirmed its engineering troops are participating in demining operations in Kursk Oblast.

The assigned tasks for North Korean soldiers include:

  • conducting fire from tube artillery and multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS);
  • performing aerial and artillery reconnaissance missions;
  • directly participating in real-time fire control for MLRS units.

Despite the heavy toll of 6,000 casualties, the North Korean army has reportedly gained valuable battlefield experience. South Korean intelligence confirms they have acquired modern combat tactics and modernized their weapon systems with Russian technical assistance.

North Korea's role in the Ukraine conflict underscores a growing military partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang. The war has effectively become a testing ground for new tactics and technologies, particularly drones, which could shift regional power dynamics. Furthermore, the substantial losses suffered by North Korean forces could have profound implications for the DPRK's domestic politics and its future military strategy.
