Trump's Initiative and a New Middle East Conflict

According to Главком: A new military conflict in the Middle East has jeopardized U.S. President Donald Trump's initiative to end the war in the Gaza Strip. Peace negotiations have been effectively suspended following a joint U.S. and Israeli military operation against Iran on February 28, which has become a major obstacle to the diplomatic process. This development highlights the fragile and interconnected nature of security issues in the region.

Trump's plan envisioned not only a ceasefire in Gaza but also the disarmament of the Hamas militant group and the reconstruction of the enclave. Under its terms, militants were to surrender their weapons in exchange for amnesty. White House mediators had been conducting private talks between Israel and Hamas, and Gulf countries had pledged billions in financial aid for Gaza's recovery. Donald Trump secured these commitments from Arab states less than a month before the new war erupted. However, those same countries now face the threat of Iranian attacks themselves.

The Middle East Situation

A White House representative stated that

“the negotiations have not been completely terminated.”

Nevertheless, a planned meeting between Hamas and mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, scheduled for the day the war began, was canceled. A Hamas representative confirmed that

“talks regarding the peace plan are currently frozen.”

No new date for negotiations has been set, underscoring the prevailing uncertainty. The U.S.-led initiative now faces its most significant challenge since its inception.

The situation in the Middle East remains complex, as military actions threaten to slow or entirely halt diplomatic efforts aimed at a peaceful resolution. A return to negotiations will depend on stabilizing regional security and the willingness of the parties to compromise. The promised economic support from Arab nations could still play a crucial role in rebuilding trust and creating conditions for future dialogue, should the immediate crisis subside.
