Heart Stent Procedures Now Free for Ukrainian Patients: Eligibility and Access Explained
Free Cardiac Stenting in Ukraine
According to Главком: Starting in 2026, scheduled heart stent procedures in Ukraine will be provided to patients at no cost. This change is part of the medical guarantees program, which has been expanded to cover planned interventions for chronic ischemic heart disease. Previously, state funding was used primarily for emergency procedures, such as during heart attacks. Ischemic heart disease remains one of the most common pathologies in the country, with over 36,000 cases of myocardial infarction recorded in 2025 alone. This reform represents a significant shift in public healthcare policy, aiming to address a leading cause of mortality.
Under the new terms, the state will fully cover the cost of the doctors' work through the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU), as well as the high-cost, latest-generation stents. This means patients can receive the necessary care without any financial burden. To access the free stenting, patients must follow these steps:
- Obtain a referral from their treating cardiologist,
- Undergo the required examinations to confirm the medical indications,
- Contact one of the designated medical institutions.

Furthermore, a national 'Health Screening' program for people aged 40 and over launched on January 1, 2026, aiming to improve the early diagnosis of heart disease and other illnesses. This initiative is a crucial step in combating cardiovascular diseases, which continue to be the primary cause of death in the country. The introduction of free scheduled stenting is a major advancement in improving healthcare access for patients with cardiovascular conditions in Ukraine. It will reduce the financial strain on patients and enhance the quality of treatment, which is especially vital given the high mortality rate from ischemic heart disease. Additionally, the national screening program for those 40+ could facilitate earlier disease detection, positively impacting the overall health of the population. Together, these initiatives have the potential to substantially improve the landscape of cardiovascular care in Ukraine.
