Lawsuit Targets Viktor Yanukovych and the Russian Federation

According to Главком: A couple from the Chernihiv region has filed a lawsuit against former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, the Russian state-owned company Gazprom, and the Russian Federation itself. They are seeking compensation for their farm, which was destroyed during the full-scale invasion. Located in the village of Ivanivka, the property was razed by Russian military forces in March 2022. The farm's owner, Vadym Minevsky, estimates the damages at substantial sums: 500,000 euros in moral compensation for his wife and two children, and approximately one million dollars for himself. This legal action is part of a growing trend of Ukrainian civilians seeking redress for wartime losses through international and domestic courts.

Vadym Minevsky's farm was home to roughly 500 head of livestock. On March 7, 2022, Russian military vehicles entered the property. Soldiers broke down the gates, killed a dog, and shot pigs. Minevsky could not return to assess the damage until April 1, 2022, when he discovered extensive destruction and loss.

Seeking Justice for War Victims

The family's legal representative, Nataliia Tselovalnychenko, stated that their case is part of a broader effort where war victims pursue justice through the legal system. Similar rulings have already been made in Ukraine in favor of other victims. For instance, in Khmelnytskyi, relatives of the Korolkov couple, who died on March 22, 2024, won a case against Russia. Separately, the wife and daughter of a deceased soldier from Avdiivka won a lawsuit against Ukraine's own Ministry of Defense, which was ordered to pay them 15 million hryvnias.

This lawsuit underscores the critical effort to hold parties accountable for the destruction of Ukrainian livelihoods and property during the war. Vadym and the Minevsky family hope for a positive outcome, which could set a significant precedent for other affected Ukrainians. The increasing number of claims against Russia and other responsible parties demonstrates a growing activism among Ukrainians fighting for their rights and compensation for war-inflicted damages, a development with potential implications for international relations and justice in Ukraine.

This legal action highlights a significant trend in Ukraine, where victims of the conflict are actively seeking justice for their losses. In a similar case, a Ukrainian court recently mandated that Russia compensate a family for the death of their loved ones in an attack, illustrating the ongoing efforts to hold aggressors accountable.
