Poland Changes Status of Ukrainian Refugees: What Temporary Residence Provides
The Polish Sejm has approved a law that changes the residence status for Ukrainians currently benefiting from temporary protection. This change will allow Ukrainian refugees to transition to temporary residence status, which will provide them with access to work, education, and social programs. The document is currently awaiting the president's signature, and the changes are expected to take effect in January or early February.
To change their status, Ukrainians need to register in the information system and fill out an online form. As of today, nearly one million people are benefiting from temporary protection, primarily women with children. The legal stay of Ukrainians under protection has been extended until March 4, 2026.
The Purpose of the Law and Social Programs
The purpose of the law, according to Maciej Duszczyk, is to encourage Ukrainians to legalize their stay in Poland. With the new status, Ukrainians will be able to take advantage of various social programs, such as:
- 800+
- Good Start
- Active Parents
- and others
This change in the status of Ukrainian refugees is an important step in ensuring their rights and opportunities in Poland. As most refugees are women with children, access to education and social support can significantly ease their adaptation to a new life. The extension of legal stay until 2026 also indicates Poland's long-term commitment to supporting Ukrainians during this challenging time.
