Kyiv Heating Crisis: Over 1,000 Buildings Lose Heat After Darnytsia Power Plant Attack
Heating Crisis Grips Kyiv
According to Главком: More than 1,000 residential buildings in Kyiv are without heating after Russian strikes damaged the Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant (TPP). The facility is currently unable to produce heat or electricity, cutting off heating for 1,126 buildings it serves. The situation is further complicated by approximately 100 separate, localized failures in the capital's heating networks. This attack is part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's critical civilian infrastructure.
Impact on Schools and the Energy Sector
The heating outage has also affected 62 schools, severely disrupting education. Kyiv authorities have initiated an 'educational migration' process, moving some classes to other schools where heating is available. According to official Kateryna Pop, primary school children in several districts have already been relocated to facilities with normal temperatures and a functional heating supply. Some schools have also switched to remote learning.
Electricity for buildings that received heat from the Darnytsia TPP is being cut only during peak hours: from 8:00 to 11:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00. The broader energy situation remains dire. Since the start of 2025, Russian forces have carried out 4,500 attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, creating a nationwide strain on the power grid.
The crisis in Kyiv underscores the severe wartime consequences for civilian infrastructure and daily life. The lack of heat and power affects not only basic comfort but also the educational process, which is critical for the nation's future. Authorities are attempting to find solutions to mitigate the impact on children and ensure their continued education despite the severe resource constraints.
