No Country Can Guarantee 100% Interception of Russian Missiles and Drones, Ukraine’s Air Force Admits

Air forces acknowledged impossibility of 100% shooting down Russian missiles and drones
Генерал повітряних сил України зазначає, що повна нейтралізація російської ракетної загрози є неможливою.

The Challenge of Combined Attacks

According to Главком: Yuriy Ihnat, head of communications for the Ukrainian Air Force, stated that no nation in the world today can promise a perfect interception rate against combined assaults. Even with advanced air defense systems, adverse weather adds a major layer of difficulty.

“By deploying such a large number of munitions with varying flight parameters, the enemy also exploits weather conditions. Weather is a key factor. Systems need visual contact with the target-they simply have to see it,” Ihnat explained.

He noted that mobile fire teams, interceptor drones, and aircraft all require visual target acquisition, which becomes far harder in cloudy skies or thunderstorms.

“So today, guaranteeing that everything will be shot down is impossible. Not in the Middle East, not here. We take down the maximum possible number when air defense assets are available,” he added.

Defending Kyiv is especially tough due to technical limitations of Western missile systems. “One battery cannot cover Kyiv-it’s a massive city. The Patriot system can only look in one direction, where its radar is pointed,” Ihnat said.

Current Situation and Threats

As tensions escalate, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has threatened Kyiv with fresh strikes. She claimed these would target facilities involved in designing, producing, programming, and preparing drones for use, allegedly with help from NATO specialists. Moscow also announced plans to hit so-called decision-making centers, which include nearly two dozen political hubs and military sites.

Notably, the massive attack on Ukraine overnight on May 24 was one of the costliest and largest in recent months. Russia deployed ballistic and hypersonic missiles along with hundreds of attack drones and decoys. The price tag for that assault is estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Ukraine’s military intelligence has obtained documents indicating preparation for further missile and drone strikes, signaling an ongoing escalation.

This situation underscores the urgent need to develop air defense capabilities and adapt to shifting combat conditions. Weather, as a critical variable, can significantly affect the performance of defensive systems, forcing Ukrainian forces to rethink how they protect key infrastructure. With the conflict intensifying and new threats from Russia, Ukraine must focus on strengthening its defenses and raising readiness for potential attacks.

As the situation intensifies, the Ukrainian Air Force has raised concerns about the imminent risk of new Russian attacks, highlighting the ongoing challenges in defending against a multifaceted assault. Understanding the nature of these threats is crucial for comprehending the current dynamics of the conflict.
