Mark Carney Addresses the Economic Club of New York

According to Главком: Speaking at the Economic Club of New York, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney outlined his strategy to reshape Canada’s international partnerships amid the ongoing impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies. He sharply criticized the tariffs imposed by Trump on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automotive industries, and announced an ambitious plan to attract $1 trillion in investments to Canada over the next five years. Carney emphasized Canada’s goal of reducing its reliance on the United States-particularly in defense-and confirmed a decision to acquire Swedish surveillance aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Addressing the audience, Carney offered a twist on Trump’s famous slogan, stating that

“a strong Canada will help make America great again.”

He also reminded listeners that Canada remains the top supplier of oil, natural gas, electricity, potash, nickel, copper, and uranium to the U.S. According to the prime minister, the only sustainable way to counter global competition is to return to tariff-free automobile trade. He further noted that middle-power nations must unite against the changes initiated by the Trump administration.

Canada’s Proactive Foreign Policy

Before entering politics last year, Carney served as deputy chair of Brookfield Asset Management and chair of Bloomberg. In Toronto, he also suggested that Canada could support certain U.S. protectionist measures to preserve key provisions of the USMCA-the trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada-which is currently under review. Notably, Carney spearheaded Canada’s largest military budget increase in decades last year.

Additionally, Mark Carney became the first non-European head of government invited to the European Political Community summit in Yerevan. These moves reflect Canada’s active foreign policy and its determination to strengthen its global standing amid a shifting economic landscape.

Carney’s address underscores Canada’s efforts to adapt to the evolving dynamics of international trade and politics shaped by the Trump era. Attracting new investments and diversifying economic partnerships could prove crucial for the stability of Canada’s economy in the face of global change. Canada’s participation in the Yerevan summit also signals its ambition to play a more prominent role in shaping international relations, potentially opening up fresh avenues for cooperation with other nations.

As Canada strengthens its international alliances, Prime Minister Carney has also committed substantial support to Ukraine, pledging $270 million in aid. This move underscores Canada’s proactive approach in global affairs, particularly in response to geopolitical challenges.
