Hungarian President Stands Firm Against Resignation Calls

According to Главком: President Tamás Sulyok of Hungary has rejected Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s demand that he step down, arguing there are no legal grounds for such a move. In an interview with Index, Sulyok stated:

“There are no legal or constitutional reasons that could justify my resignation. I swore an oath to uphold the Fundamental Law and protect the constitutional order, and that oath binds me to the current majority, the minority, and the entire political nation.”

The political standoff between the president and prime minister escalated on May 13, when Magyar issued an ultimatum to Sulyok, demanding his resignation by the end of May. Magyar also left open the possibility of forcing the president out by amending the constitution. This comes after the first session of Hungary’s newly elected parliament on May 9, where Magyar’s party, Tisza, secured an absolute majority. In the April 12 elections, Magyar’s party won 141 out of 199 parliamentary seats.

In his statement, Sulyok further remarked:

“As long as it remains possible for me to carry out my duties, I intend to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to me.”

He emphasized that “the oath-as I have said-binds me to the entire political nation, not just to the majority or minority.”
