Emergency Crews Complete Roof Stabilization at Kyiv Pechersk Lavra's Dormition Cathedral
Repair and Preservation Work on the Dormition Cathedral
According to Главком: On June 23, Ukraine's State Emergency Service chief Andrii Danyk announced the completion of emergency repair and preservation work on the damaged roof of the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The cathedral's roof was severely damaged during a Russian attack on the night of June 15. Over 100 rescue workers and more than 25 pieces of equipment were deployed to carry out the work on the Lavra grounds.
The Attack and Its Aftermath
In the early hours of June 15, Russian forces launched a massive combined assault on Kyiv using missiles and attack drones. A direct strike on the UNESCO World Heritage site triggered a large fire that engulfed the cathedral's roof. Five people were killed and nearly forty others were injured in the attack. Sacred relics and liturgical items from the Lavra were successfully evacuated before the blaze spread.
The Dormition Cathedral will be fully restored. The reserve began reopening on June 19, with parts of the site once again accessible to visitors. The following areas are now open for viewing:
- The Near Caves
- The Great Lavra Bell Tower
- The Church of the Saviour at Berestove
- The Refectory Church
- Museum exhibitions
Group tours have also resumed, though advance booking is required. The Church of the Saviour at Berestove had already reopened to visitors on June 17.
Completing the emergency repairs on the Dormition Cathedral marks a significant milestone in preserving Ukraine's cultural heritage in the wake of Russian attacks. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra remains a powerful symbol of Ukrainian spirituality and culture, despite the ongoing challenges. Restoring public access highlights the country's determination to maintain cultural life even during wartime.
The recent completion of emergency repairs at the Dormition Cathedral is a vital step in the broader effort to restore and maintain access to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. As the site gradually reopens, the partial reopening of the Lavra after the devastating attack highlights both the resilience of Ukrainian culture and the ongoing need for preservation efforts in the face of adversity.
