Putin’s Regime Enters a Phase of Decline, According to Political Analyst
Erosion of Respect and Shifts Inside Russia
According to ХВИЛЯ: In an interview with Current Time, political scientist Alexander Baunov-a senior fellow at the Carnegie Berlin Center and author of "The End of the Regime"-argues that Vladimir Putin’s rule is now in a period of decay. Baunov claims that Putin is losing the population’s respect, and that officials among the top 250 have begun referring to him as "grandpa." He contends that the autocracy no longer provides security; when faced with threats, Putin hides, revealing his weakness.
The analyst further states that
“Putin is visibly losing the main resource of any ruler-the respect of the population”
and stresses that
“Putin, we see, has ceased to be a guarantor of survival.”
This stems from the fact that a regime once built on fear and repression now fails to ensure stability and safety for its citizens. Baunov predicts an intensification of repression in the near future as the most likely scenario.
Growing Difficulties and Challenges
Russia’s situation is worsening due to ongoing military operations and mobile internet blackouts.
“The war will become more visible,”
Baunov notes, pointing out that the conflict is gradually turning into the country’s governing system. At the same time, he says, there is no freedom to express concerns about the lack of security within the nation.
Among other issues Baunov highlights are Putin’s staged public appearances, where he meets with various groups such as:
- hotel residents
- teachers
- fishermen
The political scientist believes Russia is transforming into a military dictatorship, with the bureaucracy increasingly filled by participants of the "Time of Heroes" program.
With Ukrainian drones actively operating inside Russia, Baunov observes that the country must get used to sirens, explosions, and information shortages. According to the analyst, the trade-off of freedom for security has resulted in the loss of both. As a result, Russia’s situation continues to deteriorate, and in the expert’s view, Putin’s regime is on the brink of crisis.
Baunov’s comments reflect growing concerns about political stability in Russia, which could have implications not only for domestic policy but also for international relations. The situation on the battlefield and internal repression indicate that the regime faces serious challenges that might lead to shifts in power or even new forms of public protest.
As the political landscape in Russia continues to shift, the fear of internal upheaval is pushing Putin towards increasing repression. This response reflects a deep-rooted anxiety within the regime, which is further exacerbated by the ongoing military challenges.
