Drone Assault on Kyiv: Russia Targets Capital, Straining Ukraine's Energy Grid
Kyiv Endures Drone Attack on February 5, 2024
According to Главком: On February 5, 2024, Russian forces launched a drone assault against Kyiv. The strikes ignited parked vehicles in the capital's Obolonskyi district and caused damage in the Sviatoshynskyi district. This was not an isolated incident; just two days prior, on February 3, Kyiv suffered another barrage where falling drone debris damaged the Dniprovskyi, Darnytskyi, Pecherskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi districts.
Widespread Damage and Recovery Efforts
The February 3 attacks also hit the wider Kyiv region, the city of Dnipro, Sumy, and Konotop. In Konotop, a children's educational facility, private homes, and other structures were damaged. Recovery operations are now underway across all affected areas, with over 230 repair crews deployed in Kyiv alone. These relentless strikes are part of a broader Russian campaign to degrade Ukrainian infrastructure, which has been ongoing since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
"This is connected to the latest strike and the fact that the power generation deficit in the energy system remains significant."
Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that the situation within the national energy system remains difficult. He further warned that Russian forces are preparing for new attacks targeting energy infrastructure in the coming week.
These events underscore the continuation of Russian aggression against Ukraine, which has severe consequences not only for the civilian population but also for the country's critical infrastructure. As the Prime Minister noted, the persistent attacks on the energy grid create additional challenges for recovery and stability, impacting daily life and the functioning of the economy.
