Russian Strike on Kherson Power Plant Kills Worker and Damages DTEK Facilities

Russia attacked Khersonska TPP: victim, damage
Внаслідок обстрілу російських сил на енергетичний об'єкт у Херсоні загинув працівник, а також були завдані ушкодження інфраструктурі ДТЕК.

Kherson Power Plant Shelled

According to Главком: A Russian artillery strike hit the Kherson Thermal Power Plant on March 26 at approximately 2:00 PM, killing a 66-year-old female employee. The head of the Kherson City Military Administration, Yaroslav Shanhko, reported that the woman sustained fatal injuries. Shanhko expressed his condolences to her family and loved ones. These attacks on energy infrastructure are part of a sustained Russian campaign to cripple Ukraine's power grid, especially as the country approaches the second anniversary of the full-scale invasion.

This is not an isolated incident. Last December, Russian occupying forces also attacked the Kherson TPP using drones, artillery, and other weapons, damaging the station's buildings and equipment. Furthermore, in the early hours of March 26, Russian forces struck four DTEK energy facilities in the Odesa region, causing them to lose power.

Government Response and Recovery Needs

In response to these threats, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has allocated UAH 12.85 billion under resilience plans for the regions. These funds are designated for protecting 209 critical infrastructure objects in frontline regions and the Kyiv region. The total estimated need for the recovery and modernization of Ukraine's energy sector over the next decade is now $90.6 billion, which is 34% higher than previous damage assessments.

The shelling of the Kherson TPP underscores the persistent threat military action poses to Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Attacks on critical facilities have severe consequences not only for electricity supply but also for civilian safety. The government's move to fund the protection of such objects highlights the urgent need for measures to mitigate risks and restore infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict.

The recent shelling of the Kherson Thermal Power Plant is part of a broader pattern of attacks targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Similar incidents, such as the March 14 assault on Kherson, highlight the ongoing threat to civilian safety and essential services. These repeated strikes emphasize the urgent need for protective measures and recovery efforts in the region.
