Russian Strike Hits Ukrainian Railway Passenger Train in Mykolaiv Region
Passenger Train Targeted in Latest Russian Attack
According to Главком: On May 7, the Russian military struck a passenger train operated by Ukrzaliznytsia in the Mykolaiv region. The attack damaged the locomotive, but all passengers and crew on board remained unharmed and safe. As a result of the incident, two train services experienced delays:
- Train No. 101/102 from Mykolaiv to Lozova departed 2 hours and 11 minutes late,
- Train No. 206 from Mykolaiv to Kherson was delayed by 1 hour and 11 minutes.
Ukrzaliznytsia's press service reported that 'the air alert in the region has just ended. We have already secured a backup locomotive, so services will continue in frontline areas, but we ask passengers to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of the train crew.' This attack is part of a broader pattern of assaults on Ukrainian rail infrastructure during the ongoing war.
Wave of Attacks and Ukrzaliznytsia's Response
This strike followed a series of attacks by Russian forces on May 5, which targeted locomotives and rail cars in three Ukrainian regions. In Kharkiv region, one rail car was completely destroyed. Additionally, on April 23, the Russian army struck railway infrastructure in Kryvyi Rih.
In response to these escalating threats, Ukrzaliznytsia is deploying a network of mobile modular shelters. The company plans to build over 800 such shelters at its own facilities, aiming to protect both passengers and railway staff during wartime. This initiative underscores the railway's commitment to maintaining service continuity despite constant danger.
The attack on the passenger train highlights the persistent risk to infrastructure in Ukraine, especially near the front lines. The resulting delays reflect the need for the transport system to adapt to new security realities. By rolling out these shelters, Ukrzaliznytsia demonstrates its effort to safeguard travelers and keep passenger operations stable amid ongoing Russian aggression.
The recent attack on the passenger train is not an isolated incident, as it follows a series of assaults on Ukrainian rail infrastructure. In light of these events, Ukrainian Railways is implementing over 800 modular shelters to enhance safety for both passengers and railway staff, reflecting their commitment to maintaining operations amidst ongoing threats.
