Russia Blocks Evacuation of 6,000 Civilians in Kherson Region
Humanitarian Crisis in Oleshky and the Kherson Region
According to Главком: Russia is preventing the humanitarian evacuation of civilians from occupied Oleshky and nearby settlements in the Kherson region. Negotiations for a ceasefire continue, but no concrete agreements have been reached. The situation remains critical: over 6,000 civilians, including roughly 200 children and a majority of elderly residents with limited mobility, are cut off from food, water, and medical care.
Since the occupation began, Oleshky's population has dropped from 24,000 to about 2,000. Across all four affected settlements-Hola Prystan, Stara Zbur'ivka, and Nova Zbur'ivka-the total population has fallen from around 40,000 to approximately 6,000.
Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights: 'This is a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe. Ukrainian civilians are left without food, virtually no water, and no medicine.'
Talks to restore a ceasefire involve military representatives from both sides. Preliminary timelines were agreed upon, but Russia has not provided concrete security guarantees. Lubinets has asked the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to join the evacuation effort. The ICRC has confirmed its readiness to act, but only if a ceasefire agreement is reached.
Separately, Ukraine is working with the United States and former First Lady Melania Trump's team to repatriate Ukrainian children illegally taken by Russia. Ukrainian authorities are continuously compiling and verifying lists of these children.
As the humanitarian situation worsens, shelling in Kherson continues to endanger local residents, including those delivering hot meals to front-line areas. One cook lost a leg, and a driver sustained blast injuries. A consolidated list of people in urgent need of assistance has been submitted to the ICRC.
Critical Humanitarian Conditions
Roads to Oleshky are mined, and residents are dying of starvation. Those attempting to bring in bread or medicine come under drone attacks. The situation remains tense, and the need for humanitarian aid is dire.
This crisis highlights the severe humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict. The blockade of humanitarian corridors and the lack of a ceasefire agreement are making it nearly impossible for civilians to access essential resources. The immediate consequences of this crisis could have long-term effects on the region's stability and the well-being of its people.
As the humanitarian crisis escalates in the Kherson region, the Red Cross has confirmed its willingness to assist in the evacuation of those trapped. This development could provide a glimmer of hope for the thousands of civilians who are currently suffering from a lack of essential resources amid ongoing hostilities.
