Russia denounced the agreement with the USA on the destruction of plutonium: what does it mean
According to hvylya.net: The State Duma of the Russian Federation decided to say 'goodbye' to the agreement with the USA on the disposal of plutonium. This agreement was signed back in 2000 and confirmed in 2011. The main goal of the agreement was for both countries to destroy 34 tons of plutonium each, by processing it at nuclear power plants.
Russia unexpectedly halted this process in 2016, arguing this was due to 'unfriendly actions by the United States.'
The Kremlin indicated that several conditions must be met for cooperation to resume, including the withdrawal of American troops from Eastern European countries, lifting sanctions related to Crimea and Donbas, as well as repealing the 'Magnitsky Act' and compensating for losses from sanctions. This is just one of the steps Russia is taking to limit arms control. The previous step was the suspension of participation in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in February 2023.
The Russian side is taking steps one by one, trying to dismantle the mechanisms of arms control, demanding specific actions from the USA for the restoration of cooperation while adhering to its own conditions.
