Pussy Riot Officially Designated as an Extremist Group

According to Главком: The Russian Federation has placed the feminist punk collective Pussy Riot on its national registry of terrorists and extremists. The decision was posted on the official website of the Federal Financial Monitoring Service (Rosfinmonitoring). This move follows the group being labeled an extremist organization in December 2025, a ruling that was upheld by the Moscow City Court’s Appeals Panel in February 2026.

In early May 2026, Pussy Riot-alongside the activist group Femen-staged a protest near the Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, drawing further international attention to their cause. The legal crackdown began earlier, with a Russian court declaring the group extremist in December 2025, and the appeals court confirming that status two months later.

Activists Face Lengthy Prison Sentences

Several members of the collective have been handed severe prison terms for allegedly discrediting the Russian military. Maria Alyokhina was sentenced in absentia to 13 years in a penal colony. Taso Pletner received 11 years, while Olga Borisova, Diana Burkot, and Alina Petrova were each given eight-year sentences. The group’s high-profile protest at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior took place on February 21, 2012, marking the start of their confrontation with the authorities. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were arrested on March 3, 2012, followed by Yekaterina Samutsevich on March 16 of the same year.

These developments come as President Vladimir Putin has signed off on a new strategy to combat extremism, which now includes the concept of “Russophobia.” The previous anti-extremism framework had been in place since 2020. The listing of Pussy Riot carries immediate and severe consequences: all bank accounts, payment cards, and digital wallets linked to the organization within Russia are frozen. Moreover, any donations, mentions, or distribution of the punk group’s symbols are now punishable by long prison sentences for financing or justifying extremism. This reflects what the Putin decree describes as a hostile, biased, and aggressive stance toward Russian citizens, language, culture, traditions, and history-manifested in discriminatory actions by authorities in unfriendly foreign states.

The designation of Pussy Riot as an extremist organization and their inclusion on the terrorist and extremist list signals an escalation of repressive measures by Russian authorities against activists and opposition movements.

This decision is likely to draw further international condemnation and intensify debates about human rights in Russia. Pussy Riot has long been recognized for its advocacy of women’s rights and free speech. Additionally, Putin’s newly approved anti-extremism strategy may indicate the government’s intent to tighten societal control and further restrict freedom of expression.
