Russia Loses Over 100 Square Kilometers in Ukraine for the First Time in Eight Months
A Turning Point Felt on the Frontline
According to Главком: In April 2024, Russia experienced a net loss of controlled territory in Ukraine for the first time since August 2024. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian occupying forces lost control of 116 square kilometers of Ukrainian land. This shift was primarily driven by medium-range drone strikes targeting the occupiers' logistics, which significantly hampered their combat capabilities. To provide context, this marks a notable reversal after months of steady Russian advances in the region.
Russia still occupies roughly 20% of Ukraine's territory. March and April 2024 set records for the number of occupiers eliminated, with Russian troop losses reaching 35,000 per month. Overall, according to Western officials, Russia's monthly casualties range from 30,000 to 35,000 military personnel.
Commenting on this situation, a senior Security Service of Ukraine officer with the call sign Bankir stated:
“This section of the frontline holds thanks to the coordinated work of all defense forces-from the infantry holding positions to the drones that are constantly operating and striking the enemy.”
Meanwhile, since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has suffered up to 352,000 fatalities, according to estimates from opposition media outlets.
Drones Disrupt Supply Lines
The pace of occupier advances has been slowing since November 2025. Over the last six months, Russia has captured half as much territory as it did during the same period in 2025. The use of drones capable of cutting off supply lines at distances exceeding 160 kilometers from operator positions has emerged as a key factor reshaping the course of combat operations.
Kyrylo Bondarenko, commenting on the situation, noted: 'We see and feel how the mood of Russian troops on the frontline is changing. They are exhausted.' This indicates that pressure from Ukrainian forces, particularly through the effective use of drones, is beginning to yield results, leading to a shift in the balance of power on the frontline.
Losses and Warnings
The changing situation on the frontline has sparked caution among analysts and military experts. Kristina Harvard emphasized:
“This is precisely what undermines the entire concept.”
Given the modern challenges facing Russian forces, the further development of events will remain a focus for both Ukrainian and international observers.
Thus, April 2024 proved to be a landmark month, demonstrating the potential for a shift in the course of the war in Ukraine, particularly thanks to new tactical approaches by Ukrainian forces. These events could significantly impact the strategic plans of both sides, as well as international support for Ukraine in its fight for territorial integrity.
The recent territorial losses for Russia have significant implications for its military posture. As the situation evolves, it's important to note that this year marks a historic shift, as Russia has conducted its May 9 parade without tanks for the first time in two decades, reflecting a stark change in its military capabilities and public perception. Such developments indicate a broader trend that could affect future engagements on the battlefield.
