February Sees Russia's Smallest Territorial Gain in Eight Months at 126 Square Kilometers
Territorial Occupation in February 2025
According to Главком: Russian forces seized 126 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in February 2025. This monthly gain was half the size of the advance recorded in January and represents the smallest territorial increase since July 2024. According to analysts from DeepState, the difference in the number of attacks compared to January was 4%.
Advancement of Russian Troops
The most significant Russian advances were recorded on the Pokrovsk front, accounting for 32% of all assault actions. The Sloviansk sector followed in second place with 23%, and the Kramatorsk sector was third with 16%. Collectively, these three sectors comprised 39% of all advances while representing only 9% of total attacks. Additionally, the Kostiantynivka sector saw 21% of assault actions, and the Sumy region saw 7%.
In 2025, Russian troops have taken control of approximately 4,700 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, which is about 0.78% of the country's total area. In 2024, Ukraine lost control over more than 3,600 square kilometers. Analysts note that 'the occupied territory increased by 126 sq km in February – half as much as in January and the smallest since July 2024'. These figures provide a crucial snapshot of the war's shifting front lines, which have seen periods of intense fighting and relative stalemate.
This data indicates a change in the dynamics of combat operations on the front and necessitates further analysis of the situation.
The slowdown in the rate of territorial capture by Russian forces in February may signal changes on the battlefield that require detailed study. Observing tactical shifts and analyzing activity across different sectors can aid in assessing the conflict's future trajectory. This also underscores the importance of continuous situation monitoring for informed decision-making at the level of military command and strategic planning.
