Four Fortress Cities in Donetsk Become the Focus of Russian Strikes
Escalating Crisis in Donetsk Region
According to Главком: Russian forces have intensified their assault on the Donetsk region, zeroing in on the strategic hubs of Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Kostiantynivka, and Druzhkivka. This concentrated offensive poses a grave threat to regional stability. Following the capture of Siversk in December, Ukraine's defensive lines have begun to crack, paving the way for relentless attacks on these urban centers. Moscow is employing a scorched-earth strategy, exemplified by an April airstrike on Sloviansk using a FAB-1500 glide bomb that obliterated an entire neighborhood. The resulting destruction of infrastructure is severe, forcing mass evacuations of the local population.
Sloviansk and Kramatorsk remain key Ukrainian strongholds in Donetsk. Russian troops have advanced close enough to regularly shell these cities with glide bombs and FPV drones. Reports indicate that by April, roughly 1,000 people were leaving Sloviansk each week, shrinking its population from 50,000 in March to under 44,000. In June, sustained shelling forced the closure of the maternity ward at Sloviansk's main hospital, which had been treating 10 to 15 civilians weekly for drone-inflicted injuries.
Growing Alarm and Evacuation Efforts
Conditions in the so-called 'fortress belt' cities, including Kostiantynivka and Druzhkivka, are equally alarming. Travel to Druzhkivka has been halted due to extreme danger. Roads leading to Sloviansk and Kramatorsk are being extensively fitted with protective netting against drone attacks. Regional police officer Pavlo Diachenko is actively evacuating people from high-risk zones such as Bakhmut, Toretsk, Pokrovsk, Siversk, and Avdiivka.
Vadym Kostrytskyi noted that 'the enemy is trying to cut off logistics routes and is focused on the complete destruction of populated areas.'
Residents of neighboring Mykolaivka describe the situation by saying 'the city has been virtually erased from existence.' Amid the military operations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope for renewed peace talks, while European Council President António Costa has ordered the opening of a diplomatic channel with Russia. European nations, together with Ukrainian authorities, are working on a strategy to engage the Russian Federation in a peaceful resolution.
The situation in Donetsk remains extremely tense, with active combat and relentless shelling posing a serious threat to civilians and infrastructure. The lack of security in these key cities underscores the importance of international diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a peaceful settlement to the conflict. Cooperation between Ukraine and European countries in this context could prove decisive in stabilizing the region.
The situation in Donetsk continues to deteriorate, with reports indicating that Russian forces have launched over 20 strikes in a single day. This escalation highlights the urgency of the crisis and the need for comprehensive evacuation efforts. As the conflict intensifies, understanding the full scope of the attacks is crucial for grasping the challenges faced by the region.
