A Russian Man Joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces to Dodge Prison—Then Got Captured
The Story of Vitaly from Serov
According to Главком: Vitaly, a 20-year-old from the town of Serov in Sverdlovsk Oblast, ended up as a prisoner of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) just three months after signing a military contract. He enlisted to avoid a prison sentence for theft and received 1.2 million rubles, part of which he sent to his mother. His case came to light thanks to journalist Dmitry Karpenko, who released a video of Vitaly’s conversation with his stepfather. In the footage, the stepfather scolds him for being captured, saying:
“You should have gotten yourself killed. Were you without your rifle? Alright, bye for now.” - Dmitry Karpenko
Vitaly attended a special needs school with a simplified curriculum that excluded geometry, computer science, and advanced anatomy. Initially deemed unfit for compulsory military service due to psychological issues, he was placed in the reserves. However, a later medical board reclassified him as Category A-fully healthy-after which he was assigned to an assault unit.
The Story of Sergey Drachevsky
Another captured individual is Sergey Drachevsky from Saint Petersburg. He holds a PhD in economics, four university degrees, and an MBA from the United Kingdom. Despite his experience working at multinational corporations, he was taken prisoner due to mounting household debts and a loan for a BMW X6. These cases highlight the wide range of circumstances that can drive people to join military operations-and ultimately fall into captivity.
The stories of Vitaly and Sergey illustrate the complex socioeconomic pressures that can influence individuals to participate in armed conflicts. They show how personal struggles, such as financial burdens or legal troubles, may push people to turn to military service as a way out. This underscores that war often involves not just patriotic volunteers, but also those trapped in difficult life situations.
Similar to Vitaly's story, the case of Sergey Drachevsky from Saint Petersburg reveals how financial struggles can lead individuals to enlist in military service. Sergey, an accomplished academic, found himself in dire circumstances due to overwhelming debts, ultimately resulting in his capture. These narratives shed light on the diverse motivations that compel people to engage in conflict, emphasizing the broader societal issues at play.
