Overnight Drone Strikes Target Naftogaz Facilities in Dnipropetrovsk Region
Drone Attack in Dnipropetrovsk Region
According to Главком: Late on May 17 through the early hours of May 18, Russian drones struck critical infrastructure sites operated by Naftogaz in the Dnipropetrovsk region. These attacks hit a Ukrnafta fueling station, where two female employees were wounded, and killed two people in the city of Dnipro. In total, 18 individuals sustained injuries, eight of whom were hospitalized with doctors describing their condition as moderate. This incident is part of a broader pattern of strikes on civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.
According to reports, the assaults began on the evening of May 17 and continued into the night. Around 2:30 AM, missiles hit a residential neighborhood in Dnipro. Among the injured were a two-year-old girl and a ten-year-old boy. All victims are receiving necessary medical care, stated Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration.
“Eight people have been hospitalized-four women and four men. Doctors assess their condition as moderate. All those affected are getting the care they need,” said Oleksandr Ganzha.
Scope of Destruction
The shelling damaged roughly 20 buildings, including:
- two kindergartens
- a gymnasium
- a mosque
- an institute building
- a tram
The Ukrnafta fueling station’s premises and equipment were completely destroyed. Naftogaz reported that the full extent of the damage cannot yet be assessed due to ongoing strikes. The company emphasized that all targeted sites are purely civilian infrastructure with no connection to military objectives.
Additionally, attacks affected other regions of Ukraine. In Kharkiv region, a Naftogaz gas production facility was damaged, as was a company enterprise in Zhytomyr region.
These strikes on civilian infrastructure highlight the growing risk to civilians in Ukraine, as shelling occurs not only in combat zones but also in cities where ordinary people live. Rebuilding the damaged critical infrastructure may take considerable time, negatively impacting the region’s economy. This also raises concerns about public safety and the urgent need for better protection against such attacks in the future.
The recent drone strikes in the Dnipropetrovsk region are part of a worrying trend of escalating violence targeting civilian areas. In a related incident, another attack in Dnipro resulted in damage to both a residential building and an industrial site, leading to additional casualties.
