Visa Issues Force Russian Athletes to Miss World Cup Stage in Canada
Russian Athletes Absent from World Cup Competition
According to Главком: Russian canoe and kayak athletes will not participate in the World Cup stage scheduled for July 9–12 in Montreal, Canada, due to visa complications. According to a federation spokesperson,
“Our athletes had to skip the World Cup stage in Canada because their entry visas were not ready by the time the team was supposed to depart for Montreal.”
This event serves as a ranking competition to earn qualification points for the 2028 Olympics, meaning the absence could significantly harm Russian athletes’ chances of competing in future international events.
Elimination of Russian Occupiers
Separately, military reports confirm the elimination of two Russian occupiers. Ukrainian defense forces took out Georgiy Kamalov, aged 46, who played for the Vladivostok-based team 'Era' from 2003 to 2011. After ending his playing career due to injury, Kamalov moved into coaching, starting within the 'Era' system. In recent years, he worked with the football club 'Anri,' leading it to the level of the Russian Cup.
Additionally, the Armed Forces of Ukraine eliminated Russian occupier Chingiz Dodiyev, born December 1, 1993, in the village of Baragkhan, Kurumkansky District, Republic of Buryatia. Dodiyev was a master of sports in hand-to-hand combat, a candidate for master of sports in army hand-to-hand combat and universal karate Ukado/Kempo. He held a black belt, 2nd dan in self-defense, and earned numerous awards, including:
- three Russian Cup champion titles in universal karate Ukado/Kempo;
- two victories at the Northwestern championships in hand-to-hand combat among security forces;
- three podium finishes at Trans-Baikal region competitions in army hand-to-hand combat;
- the title of prize-winner of the Republic of Buryatia in combat sambo.
The Russian athletes’ absence from the World Cup stage highlights the major administrative hurdles they face, which could disrupt their preparations for upcoming international competitions. This situation also reflects the broader tensions between Russia and Western nations, impacting sports exchanges. The elimination of Russian military personnel with sporting backgrounds suggests that athletics and armed conflict continue to intersect amid modern global politics.
In light of the ongoing visa challenges faced by Russian athletes, it's worth noting that this issue is not isolated to canoe and kayak competitors. Recently, similar complications have also prevented Russian archers from participating in a World Cup event, highlighting a broader trend that could impact various sports disciplines as international competitions approach.
