Incident in Galati

According to Главком: On May 29, a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle struck a residential building in the Romanian city of Galati, triggering a blaze. Located near the Ukrainian border, Galati became the scene of an event that has deeply alarmed Romanian authorities. The drone crossed into Ukrainian airspace during a wave of Russian strikes on infrastructure. Two people sustained minor injuries: a woman suffered first-degree burns, and a 14-year-old boy is believed to have experienced a panic attack. The crash occurred overnight, prompting an immediate response from specialized units of the IGSU, the Interior Ministry, intelligence services, and Romanian police.

Romania's Response

In reaction to this incident, Romania decided to shut down the only Russian Federation consulate general, located in Constanța, and expel its head. Foreign Minister Oana Toiu stated that

“the event is a blatant and unacceptable violation of our airspace.”

Additionally, Romania will request NATO to supply air defense systems, as the country has recorded at least 25 airspace breaches since 2022-seven of them this year alone. Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan confirmed that Romania has asked allies for radars capable of detecting low-flying targets.

At the crash site, Romanian military officials noted that two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the target but failed to shoot it down. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has been in contact with Romanian authorities following the event. Independent expert Radu Tudor remarked that

“NATO's defense upgrades are struggling to keep pace with the rapid innovation of Russian drones.”

In light of this, there are discussions about transferring the MEROPS counter-drone system under NATO command, while Romanian military leadership and NATO representatives work to improve the country's detection and engagement capabilities.

An anonymous source within Ukraine's military leadership views the incident as a deliberate provocation by Moscow, citing the large amount of fuel carried by the drone. In the coming days, Romania will raise the issue of strengthening security on the eastern flank during a scheduled meeting of NATO ambassadors. Although the country does not currently plan to convene emergency consultations under Article 4 of the NATO treaty, the situation remains under control, and Romanian authorities are taking all necessary measures to ensure safety.

The Galati incident underscores the growing security risks in the region, as Romania-a NATO member-faces a direct threat from Russia. The drone crash has triggered not only physical damage but also political repercussions, potentially leading to shifts in Romania's defense policy and deeper cooperation with NATO. Romania's response to this event could also influence Moscow's future actions in the region and shape the broader security architecture of Eastern Europe.

In the aftermath of the drone incident, reactions from Moscow have emerged, with President Putin claiming ignorance about the crash and attributing the responsibility to Ukraine. This unexpected statement adds another layer to the already tense situation in the region.
