Satellite Failure Disrupts TV Service Across Russia and Occupied Ukrainian Regions

Russian satellite Express-AT1 malfunctions
Технічні збої призвели до перебоїв у телевізійному мовленні в Росії та на тимчасово окупованих територіях України.

Express-AT1 Satellite Declared Lost

According to Главком: The Russian telecommunications satellite Express-AT1 failed on March 4, causing disruptions to satellite television services across Russia and in occupied Ukrainian territories. The satellite, which had an operational lifespan intended to last until 2030, was deactivated for unknown reasons, according to the state enterprise Space Communications. Attempts to restore its functionality were unsuccessful, and the spacecraft is now considered a total loss. This incident highlights the vulnerability of critical space-based infrastructure.

Impact on Broadcasters and Viewers

The Express-AT1 satellite was used by major providers including Tricolor, NTV-Plus, and Russky Mir. Its failure caused signal loss for subscribers in various Russian regions on the day of the malfunction. The satellite provided coverage from Kaliningrad to the Far East. Russky Mir, an operator established in 2022 to broadcast satellite TV in Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine, has also reported a temporary service outage.

In response to the technical failure, representatives from Space Communications stated that

"for a number of consumers, the technical capability to receive satellite television will be restored in the coming days, but will require retuning receiving equipment to a different orbital position. For the remaining subscribers, the ability to receive satellite television will become available within a month."

However, the announcement of the failure was noted as clearly suggesting a possible external impact on the satellite itself.

The situation with the Express-AT1 satellite underscores the heavy reliance on satellite television in areas with limited information access, such as Russia and the occupied territories. The signal loss will significantly impact consumers who depend on these services for news and entertainment. While operators are working on solutions, the uncertainty surrounding the timeline for restoring broadcasts creates additional challenges for subscribers, particularly given the current political climate in the region.
