NATO Secretary General’s Visit to Ukraine

According to Главком: During a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte delivered a blunt message to the Russian people. He stated that the equipment and ammunition being provided to Russian soldiers are substandard, exposing them to a high risk of injury or death. Rutte urged young Russians and their families to seriously consider the likely consequences they will face.

“They have set up a rodeo for you. You are being sent with a high probability of being wounded or killed.” - Mark Rutte

Rutte also highlighted the severe strain on Russia’s economy, noting that the country cannot cover all the costs required to sustain the war. “We know that Russia is unable to compensate for all the expenses the war demands,” he said. The NATO chief expressed concern that there are no signs of Russia being willing to stop, pointing to the continued loss of civilian lives and the destruction of cities.

Continued Support for Ukraine and Honoring Fallen Defenders

Rutte reaffirmed that all 32 NATO member states will keep supporting Ukraine. He arrived in Kyiv for a visit where he met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. During the trip, Rutte and Zelenskyy paid tribute to fallen Ukrainian defenders at the Wall of Remembrance in Kyiv. This event marked the beginning of an official visit by the NATO North Atlantic Council to Ukraine. Rutte’s last visit to Kyiv was in early February 2026.

This visit underscores NATO’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine, sending a strong signal to the international community that the alliance’s pledge to defend Ukraine’s territorial integrity remains firm. The direct appeal to Russian citizens may also be an effort to weaken domestic support for the war by emphasizing the dangers soldiers face and the economic hardships the country is enduring. Such messaging could play a role in shaping public opinion both inside Russia and abroad.

Rutte's visit comes at a crucial time as NATO continues to bolster its support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict. For more insights on the significance of this diplomatic mission and its implications for regional stability, read more about NATO Secretary General's arrival in Kyiv.
