Prosecutors Appeal Bail Conditions for Lawmaker

According to САП: The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) has filed an appeal against the bail conditions set for a Ukrainian Member of Parliament from the 9th convocation, who is suspected of illicit enrichment. A SAPO prosecutor submitted the appeal to the Appeals Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC), seeking to increase the bail amount and impose additional procedural obligations on the suspect.

The appeal targets a HACC ruling from April 17, 2026, which set bail for the MP at 3 million hryvnias. The prosecution deems this sum insufficient and is demanding it be raised to 12.7 million hryvnias. As part of the additional obligations, the prosecutor insists the suspect must:

  • surrender all passports for travel abroad to the custody of relevant state authorities;
  • submit any other documents granting the right to leave and enter Ukraine.

The suspect is to be held accountable for illicit enrichment involving over 12.7 million hryvnias. This case is a test of Ukraine's judicial resolve in holding high-ranking officials accountable, a key demand of international partners and Ukrainian civil society.

Case Significance for the Public

This proceeding is part of Ukraine's broader, ongoing anti-corruption campaign, which has intensified in recent years. The public importance of such cases lies in their demonstration of state bodies' commitment to combating corrupt crimes and strengthening the rule of law. By challenging the bail amount, the prosecution aims to ensure proper oversight of the suspect and prevent any potential evasion of justice, reinforcing the principle that no one is above the law.

In a related case highlighting ongoing corruption issues in Ukraine, a former member of the Odessa City Council has agreed to pay 13 million hryvnias to evade a prison sentence. This situation underscores the broader challenges faced by the judicial system in addressing corruption among public officials.
