Ukrainian Security Service Unearths $1.5 Million Scheme Supplying Defective Goggles to Armed Forces
Scheme to Embezzle State Funds Exposed
According to Главком: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), in a joint operation with the Prosecutor General's Office, has uncovered a scheme to embezzle state funds through the supply of defective military equipment. The investigation revealed that the general director of a Zaporizhzhia-based company is suspected of involvement in this crime, which involved a total of 60 million hryvnias.
Details of the Faulty Equipment Supply
According to the investigation, the supply involved 43,000 ballistic protective goggles and goggles-masks that failed to meet safety standards. Two supply contracts were signed in April 2024 with a state-owned enterprise under Ukraine's Ministry of Defence. SBU investigators have already served a notice of suspicion under Part 5 of Article 191 of Ukraine's Criminal Code.
During searches, the entire batch of defective products was seized from the logistics warehouses of the Defence Forces. The detained suspects face potential penalties of up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property. Those detained include the general director of a defence plant, Leonid Shyman, and his first deputy, Oleksiy Kyrychenko.
This case underscores the critical need for stringent oversight in military procurement and quality assurance, as soldier safety is paramount during wartime. Amid active combat and heightened demands on national defence, investigating such crimes is vital for maintaining trust in Ukraine's military supply system. - Source: Security Service of Ukraine
