University Security Guard Arrested for Directing Russian Missile Strikes in Kyiv
Suspect Detained for Allegedly Coordinating Russian Attacks
According to Главком: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has arrested a man suspected of coordinating Russian strikes in Kyiv and the Donetsk region. Investigators allege he provided the occupiers with locations of energy facilities and command posts. Law enforcement officials note that the suspect worked as a security guard at one of Kyiv's universities.
Russian military intelligence (GRU) recruited the man through his sister, who lives in Russia. 'The agent's relative later served as a liaison. Specifically, she relayed coordinates to the GRU on his behalf,' the SBU stated.
According to the investigation, the suspect monitored the aftermath of Russian attacks on Kyiv and adjusted subsequent strikes. He also assisted Russia in targeting sites in the Donetsk region.
Suspect's Activities and Consequences
The suspect surveilled thermal power plants and other energy infrastructure in the capital, driving around the city and marking locations on maps with photos of damaged structures. He gathered data on the deployment of reserve command posts and defensive positions of Ukraine's Armed Forces in the Donetsk region.
He also collected intelligence on the locations of reserve command posts and combat positions of Ukrainian forces in Donetsk. To do this, he discreetly questioned acquaintances about Ukrainian defenders on various fronts in the eastern region.
The man was arrested at his home in the Kyiv region. He is suspected under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason under martial law) and is in custody without the possibility of bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
For context, this arrest is part of broader efforts by Ukrainian authorities to counter Russian espionage and sabotage networks operating within the country. In a related case, SBU cyber specialists recently blocked another attempt by the enemy to gain access to Starlink terminals in Ukraine. Earlier reports indicated that a 40-year-old man was passing coordinates of military sites to the enemy and filming Ukrainian military vehicle movements to adjust strikes. According to the investigation, that suspect, a resident of the Kyiv region, contacted a representative of hostile intelligence services via the Telegram messenger in February 2026.
The arrest of this man, suspected of high treason, underscores the importance of Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression, especially under martial law. The Security Service of Ukraine continues actively identifying and neutralizing threats from hostile agents seeking to harm national security. These events highlight the complexity and danger faced by Ukrainian law enforcement amid the ongoing conflict.
The ongoing efforts by Ukrainian authorities to dismantle Russian espionage networks have recently led to significant arrests, including that of an FSB agent posing as an elderly man who was orchestrating attacks in Zaporizhzhia. This case highlights the pervasive threat of infiltration within Ukraine as security measures intensify in response to increasing military aggression.
